Sometimes the reality of my life is overwhelming, but overwhelming for greatly profound reasons.

As I progressed through my life I was thoroughly convinced that my chronic fear and worry would either end my life prematurely or send me down a dark path. I am fortunate to have realized that I needed to do something rather than let my fears anchor my real self from breaking free from the fear prison I built for myself. As I continue to push myself as a coach, tennis player and overall warrior on the healing path of anxiety, I realize that all the challenges I had to face in life better prepared me for the man I am today. Getting to the point where I smile and laugh every day vs cower in fear and cry took many hours of introspection and many attempts at expanding my comfort zone.
When I served in the military and when I am working on my tennis game I always look for challenges to push the limits of my comfort. In order to overcome your fear you must find challenges and eventual accomplishments that are stronger than your fear. Even if you fail a thousand times at whatever you are pursuing, each attempt will make you a bit stronger until one day all you want to do is take on difficult challenges.
Everyone has trauma, pain and dread built into their experience from the moment they are born. I still can feel the trauma of my past, but I look at my trauma from a different perspective. As I reframed my trauma I began to develop the tools I needed to confront and overcome fear in my life instead of being conquered. These tools allowed me to have a successful military career and now be a great tennis coach to a group of great kids. Some days I am floored by how far I have come, but I don’t stay in thought for too long because there is always a task to take on and conquer.
As you travel down your path of healing these guideposts will help you ensure you are on the correct path:
- Anxiety is not your fault, but it is your responsibility to heal
- Study your fears from an academic perspective. All fear is based in uncertainty
- Always move toward what makes you afraid
- If you can find a way to smile and laugh at your discomfort you will heal rapidly
- Never settle for managing fear, work hard to conquer your fear
- Engage in physically difficult challenges: Running, biking, swimming, tennis etc and set goals for all these challenges
- Keep an anxiety journal and for each fear write down a goal for how to overcome the fear
- Surround yourself with people who will push you to improve not use your anxiety as an excuse
- Have extremely high standards for yourself and those you surround yourself with: no drinking, drugs or caffeine
- Always remember that you are a warrior even on days where you feel powerless. Your REAL self is so much more than you can perceive right now
One bonus: Listen to music that motivates you and inspires you to be better.
Healing is a difficult journey but you can achieve your goals. I know exactly the emotions and panic that you are up against, but always remember no matter how convincing your fears are your warrior self is a thousand times more powerful than your fear.
