What I learned 1 year caffeine free (Currently writing while caffeinated)

Hey Warriors,

Over a year ago I decided to give up caffeine in order to help my anxiety recovery. I am happy to say that going caffeine free helped me greatly, but recently I decided to get back on the caffeine express for a few specific reasons which I will detail later in this post.

What I learned going caffeine free

  • Caffeine does have a strong effect on making us anxious, however we have more control than we think
  • It is possible to enjoy life completely sober. Any drug can only enhance feelings we are capable of feeling
  • Depersonalization truly is just enhanced anxiety. Once I was caffeine free my DP symptoms went away
  • Drugs are a habit. We think we need them to function but that isn’t true
  • As with any substance, the capability to abuse it always exists. We have to maintain discipline when it comes to “soft” drug use

Why did I return to caffeine after 1 year?

I learned a lot from my time away from my favorite upper. From the skills I learned caffeine free I told myself that to truly test my growth and healing, I would need to return to the substance that once terrified me.

Of course no substance is 100% healthy but I am enjoying the caffeine sensation. With the tools I have now I am prepared to confront any panic that may arise from my use of caffeine.

  1. I’ve been caffeine-free for a few years now because of my anxiety and made the mistake of having some coffee the other day. The experience reminded me why I have avoided caffeine all this time.

    1. It will take time. Once we breakthrough our fears the experience totally changes. I really enjoy the sensation now but I know how the experience can be overwhelming.

I highly encourage you to find a day to drink half a cup in a relaxed environment or with friends. Caffeine is a drug and like all drugs we have to find our tolerence levels.

    2. I will say there have been two or three moments that I experienced Depersonalization symptoms, however I have grown so much in my journey I recognized the sensation and made peace with it

      1. I’m glad you were able to accept it and make your peace. Like you said, I think very little is okay as long as I don’t drink too much.
